Interested in getting more involved at School Without Walls this year, Freshmen? Read about what expert upperclassmen recommend to make the most of the first year!

Malcolm Laskowski (‘27), a junior at Walls encouraged underclassmen to “Try new things”. Laskowski continues, “There’s so many clubs and sports and different activities.” The junior suggests that all underclassmen should absolutely engage in new clubs and activities at Walls. He also mentions that participating in clubs and activities is a great way to meet new people and make new friends with similar hobbies and interests.

“Don’t procrastinate,” Laskowski suggested as a warning to freshmen. “When you get to work, try to have a schedule or use your calendar or something. ‘Cause it’s very easy to get overloaded with work.” He mentioned that organization is a key to success at school, with the goal of not receiving too much work at once. This year, Laskowski co-founded a zoology club at Walls. He highly recommends any students come visit the club as a new experience.

Senior Amirah Bunn (‘26) advised new students to “Enjoy your freshman year, it’s your easiest and most fun year!”

She also reminded them to “keep your integrity in check.” Bunn added that it’s important that students are “Being aware and unique to yourself and authentic in all classrooms, but also making sure you’re not doing anything to jeopardize your judgement or your integrity.”

Colette Gregg (‘26), another senior at Walls said “Make friends, be social, don’t be shy,” as some friendly advice for this year’s newcomers. “Don’t take freshman year too seriously,” she comments, showing a common theme that 9th grade is for getting into things, finding the right people, and being who you want to be. There’s no need for extra stress.

“Try not to pit yourselves against others,” Gregg advised. “See people as your equals,” she explains there is no point in taking all the pressure out on someone else, and that teamwork is better than disagreement. Gregg added recommendations for clubs including SWW Speech and Debate and Ethics Club.

“Join!” These experienced upperclassmen say that the best way to experience freshman year is to put yourself out there, join clubs and activities, complete work on time, and socialize with many fellow students!
