Flag Football Spotlight: Can the Girls Continue to Dominate Despite Challenges?

One unlikely sport where the Penguins dominate is flag football. Last year, DCIAA ranked the SWW girls’ team in first place, and they held the number one seed heading into the playoffs. This spring, they hope to continue that streak.
Flag football requires skills like catching, throwing, agility, and speed. Many prefer it to tackle football because it eliminates the risk of injury. The Lady Penguins foster a welcoming environment, and the team is open to anyone who wants to participate—no experience required. Unlike other schools, Walls does not have a boys’ football team.
The team’s fun and supportive atmosphere is something the players really appreciate. Menata Abate (‘25), the team’s quarterback and a leader on the field, highlighted her favorite part of playing, saying, “It’s very fun and spirited, and we all have each other’s backs.” She especially enjoys how much the team communicates. A close-knit bond like theirs can make sports teams feel like a real community—and for many students, it’s a great way to meet peers from other grades.
For those who enjoy competition, the team’s impressive winning streak is a big draw. The Penguins won the DCIAA championship last year, triumphing over all their opponents. While many players have some background in football, experience isn’t required. Emonn Bowie (‘28), new to the team this year but not to the sport, shared that she’s excited about “beating a bunch of teams and making friends.” The team’s victories stand out because many Walls sports teams tend to finish as runners-up to other schools.
One challenge the team faces this season is a coaching change. Their previous coach, Officer Bell, a security guard at Walls, had coached the team for more than ten years. Unfortunately, due to changes in DCPS administration policies, he is no longer allowed to coach. Though this was a disappointing blow for the players, they are optimistic about their new coach, Lauren Price, and hopeful that she will help them stay on track and continue their winning streak.
Since flag football is an outdoor sport, it’s a great way to enjoy time outside this spring—and the team is always open to new players! Bowie encourages anyone who’s on the fence to give it a shot: “You should totally join because it’s so much fun…you’d make a great addition to the team.” More players could help the Lady Penguins reach even bigger goals, like playing in more tournaments and gaining even greater recognition.
