Field Day: An Exciting Start to the New School Year
On Friday, September 4th, School Without Walls celebrated the start of the new school year with their annual back to school field day. Classes were shortened and after lunch students started making their way out of school and down towards Henry Bacon Park. The afternoon was a mix of class colors, group photos, games, sports and lots of fun!
For many students one of the best parts of field day was simply getting to spend time with friends outside of school. After the first few weeks, the afternoon gave students a chance to take a break from their classes and enjoy the beginning of the new school year together.
Sofia Wheeler (‘30) shared, “I thought it was really fun, I liked being outside with my friends, I like the chill field days that aren't very scheduled.”
The afternoon started out very relaxed with grades getting together to take their class photos while students organized games of volleyball or soccer. Many students found that the unorganized afternoon gave them a chance to enjoy the nice weather and hang out with friends.
Despite this, some students felt that the afternoon could have used more organized activities. When asked what would have improved the day, Zulai Portilla (‘28) shared “I think a lot of people were actually talking about how there wasn't a kickball game this field day.” Lena Voss (‘30) added “ I think it could have been structured better, I didn't really know what to do.”
Last year's end of year field day included a sign up sheet for activities, organized soccer games, races and popsicles. While students enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere, they hope to see more activities in future field days. The administration’s hard work paid off, creating a fun afternoon to kick off a new school year.
