On Nov. 4, School Without Walls’ Bike Club hosted its first bike to school day of the year. Around twenty students participated, meeting up at different points along the Rock Creek Multi-Use Trail or at Lincoln Park. On November 20, they held another, less successful one, with half the amount of students participating.
Club sponsor Mr. Jesse Koplowitz reports that bike to school days have been developing over the past years and this is the first year they are fully organized. They are planning to hold bike to school days on the last Thursday of every month. Meet up locations and times are posted around the school.
Bike to school days serve as a way to introduce and encourage students to bike to school regularly, whether to help the environment, get exercise, or any other personal reason. “I think a lot of people are open to biking to school but they’re not quite sure about the process,” Mr. Koplowitz explained. “But, if we can get a bunch of people that you could join, that would be an easier step into biking to school.”
Ella Miller (‘27) participated in the first bike to school day and reported it was successful in its goal. “I love biking but I don’t get the chance to do it often,” Miller explained, “so [bike to school day] was a great opportunity.” Christin Osei (‘29) agreed with Miller, adding that “biking is a new sport that I picked up” and he joined bike to school day because he “wanted to enjoy [biking to school] more.”
The bike club, run by senior Gideon Brokowsky, focuses on increasing bike advocacy. In addition to planning bike to school days, they are attending town hall meetings for the DC bikeway program, which is still in the works, and learning how to fix broken bikes. They are currently planning another school wide bike to school day on March 26, 2026, with the goal of having 80 students biking together.
Bike club meets in room 124 at 8:30 on Fridays. Bike to school days will happen on the last Thursday of every month and everyone is encouraged to attend, whether new to biking or not.
